Robin and I have a long tradition of doing the CIM Relay.  So many good memories and blessings from participating.

A relay is not really about how fast you can run a standard benchmark, like the 1/2 marathon, because the distances aren’t exact, each section of the course has different profiles, and part of the team’s time is the exchange process.  The relay is more about running well for the benefit of your teammate.

I haven’t trained specifically for today’s 13.4mi effort.  I’ve also had foot discomfort for a couple months.  So normally a lot wouldn’t be expected this morning.  However, I am so grateful for the Lord’s blessings in these race events.  He always does something wonderful when we truly give the effort to Him.  For me that means continually look to His guidance for how to race and act and serve others.  Although at times I may have thoughts of “this isn’t fun”, “what’s the point”, or “do the minimal”, over the years I’ve learned that is wrong and that Jesus can take a simple run and use it for His glory if I give Him my all.  That is my goal and desire.

I go to the start with Anna’s teammate, Leah.  Her mom, Debbie, dropped us off.  COVID restrictions eliminated bag checks and closer drop-off points but a new “secret” drop spot is working great.  No bag check so I’m wearing an old sweater and have an extra disposable jacket and trash bag in case I or someone around me gets cold at the start.  I use my phone to light our path.  Soon we see the familiar stretch of porta-potties that seem to stretch for miles and then we line up at the 3:30 (8min pace) area.

Our teammates, Robin and Anna, will be waiting for us at 13.4 miles.  It’s not that cold.  Everyone sheds their disposables and we throw them in giant Goodwill containers.  Hopefully they will end up keeping someone less fortunate warm this winter.  It’s Leah’s first time running the 1st half of CIM and I’m happy to be here with her to give some advice, make it fun, and calm nerves.  We look for Placer Cross-Country runners, Wyatt &  Elias.  Wyatt is going for sub-7 pace and should be lined up across from us in the “fast lane” but we don’t see him.  We sing the national anthem.  I pray that I can run for God’s glory and that we all have a meaningful, grateful experience.  Go!

IMG_20211205_063335104IMG_20211205_065937636

It takes a few minutes before our wave crosses the line.  Leah and I stick together well. Crowded but slowly spreads out.  Runners as far as we can see.  Wyat should be way ahead and Elias, doing his first one, should be closer to us.

Mile 1: 7:44.  faster than expected but was downhill.  Getting into the groove.

Mile 2: 7:35. Even faster, and flat. I figure Leah should run about 8min pace so I go over her strategy with her.  Her run stride is looking smooth and she says she feels good.  She also seems calm and comfortable.  There’s plenty of running room now, too, so I tell her I’m going to pull ahead while she maintains a steady pace.  She smiles and with a fist bump we separate.

Mile 3: 6:59. This “1st Half” of the marathon has quite a few drops.  Some ups, too.  The number of spectators increase as we go along.  Off to a great start and I look to God in thankfulness and for direction.

Mile 4: 7:01. Going a little fast in order to bring pace back to about 7:20 average.

Mile 5: 7:01. Nearing the old Exchange 1 area.  They no longer do the 4-person relay so there isn’t a crowd of runners waiting here.  I suddenly see the first familiar faces, Toby and Rob Hamilton, Wyatt’s parents!  After we wave to each other I wonder why they were looking backwards when Wyatt should be 5 minutes ahead of me?  After a few minutes more I hear, “Hey Troy”, and Wyatt comes up from behind!  This is such a cool surprise (if not strange) to be running with him.  Wyatt is a local legend and a great young man to know.  He loves running and he loves helping others run.  Sure enough, he tells me he’s helping Elias who’s doing his first marathon, get through the first 3rd.  Elias now, after getting some aid, shows up on my other side.  “Elias, how are you doing?!”  Elias is another great young man, respectful and always ready to help.  “I feel good, the miles are going by quickly”.

Mile 6: 7:17.  I’m concerned Elias is going too fast, and Wyatt is going to slow (to meet his goal of sub-3).  A 3:30 is a good first-marathon goal (mine was 3:36) but Elias is on 3:10 pace.  I tell him he should conserve now because it gets harder later but he says he wants to stick with Wyatt as long as he can.  Oh, no, sticking with Wyatt is definitely not good because Wyatt broke 3 hrs in his first marathon and is easily capable of 6:30 pace.

Mile 7: 7:15. We see Elias’ parents in multiple places.  They’re really supportive and have extra nutrition for him.  Elias is doing well eating and drinking and I start giving him all the tips I know, like easing up on the uphills and pushing the downhills.  Wyatt now tells me his plan.  He forgot his Garmin watch so has been doing calculations in his head or on his phone.  He’s going to push the next 8 miles really hard and then settle into a sustainable pace the final 8 miles in order to still break 3.  Wow, that sounds really hard but if anyone can do it, it’s Wyatt

Mile 8: 7:25.  Wyatt says goodbye and takes off and I start easing back for Elias’ sake.  Thanks, Lord, it’s all working out so great.  I have a great running partner (Elias) and the “influence” of Wyatt-speed is gone ahead Smile

Mile 9: 7:40.  I tell Elias what to expect after 20 miles – also known as the “2nd half of the marathon”.  It will feel like sprinting, even though the same pace as now.  Take it easy on the ups.  Try Coke in the last miles.  Keep this pace.

Mile 10: 7:23.  At each mile Elias is surprised how fast they come.  That’s a great sign.  I think to myself how that seldom happens to me but glad it appears that way to him.  I encourage him on his momentous feet and pull ahead to focus on my final 3 miles

Mile 11: 7:18.  I never see this mile marker.  I’m lost in thought in all the Lord does for me, to make even little things like run races such a blessing.  I also keep thinking how nice it would be to have the miles come faster than expected..

Mile 12: 7:31.  Mile 12?  I thought it was going to be 11.  I ran 2 miles and it felt like 1.  Wow, they are coming fast!  Now I have to sprint for my last mile before seeing Robin..

Mile 13: 7:09.  Through the 1/2 way arch, and now only .3 to go to the exchange site.  I see Anna and Ariel cheering, telling me Mom is waiting.  Such a joyous site to see Robin’s smile.  What a great teammate, for running and for life!  I thank God, let her get my band, and watch her happily take off to finish the marathon for us.  Thank you, Lord, for a great day, a great opportunity to run with these talented, nice young people and for the after-race time we get to spend together.  Giving you my best effort has always been rewarding.

IMG_20211205_063730854This is my 23rd Consecutive CIM Relay! Only missed it last year since it was cancelled due to COVID. This is almost half my age (47) and almost the same number of years since I gave my life to Christ (24)! It’s such a blessing to have been able to continue this tradition even with having my girls and being injured. God has made it all possible. To Him be the glory and the credit for this!

This year and for now on, this relay will be a two-person relay. I’m really sad about that but I can look back fondly on being able to race with my 3 UCD roommates in the beginning. And then later with spouses and other UCD friends. My roommates/friend/spouses are now dispersed mostly out of state and are unable to take part. This year my best roommate of all will join me: My husband Troy! Anna is continuing her relay tradition started in 2016 as a 5th grader with Troy!

For the first time in many years, Troy or I didn’t drive any runners to the start. Debbie Booth, Anna’s teammate’s mom, drove Troy and XC teammate Leah to the start. Anna and Leah have been doing this relay together for 3 years now: 2 years as middle schoolers and this year as Placer high schoolers. They have two Placer HS XC teammates running the whole marathon: Seniors Wyatt Hamilton and Elias Alvarez. Wyatt is doing his 2nd CIM (his first long run race since his record breaking COVID 100 Miler) and hopes to break 3 hours so he can qualify for Boston. This is Elias’ first marathon and run past 14 miles! We’ll be looking for them!

Anna, Ariel and I drive to the relay exchange early to get a good parking spot and to be able to see the first runners coming through. The conditions are absolutely ideal today. Sunny with barely any chill. You never know what you get this time of year!

Anna and I have plenty of time to warm-up. The announcer at this spot sounds so familiar and then I realize it’s Courtney Cardenas! He says hi on the loud speaker and touts our FCA team. Cool! Soon the top runners come by. They are so fun to watch! Soon others show up like Debbie and the Hamilton’s, Tobi and Rob. Troy will be here soon and a bit ahead of Leah which means Anna will be running me down! I’m wondering if I am overdressed. I always seem to get cold at this race. I have on leggings, t-shirt and long sleeve on top. I also have on a beanie and gloves. I decide to stick with the outfit.

I see Wyatt go by and wave. Wonder where Elias is. Here comes Troy! He comes in smiling. I try to take his picture like I saw someone else do with her teammate but it doesn’t work well. I get the chip off his ankle and on to mine. He tells me “the miles go by fast”. I’m off! My goal is to run 8 min pace like I did for the hilly Auburn Thanksgiving Day run. We will see! This is my first official race since IM Coeur d’Alene and I’ve been feeling out of race shape.

I can tell pretty quick that I am way overdressed! I’m actually hot! I take off my beanie to get some relief!

My first mile is 8:00. Great! I started my race at 13.4 so the mile markers on not matching my splits. At the Mile 15 marker I hit the split button to get on track. Elias catches up to me and we get to chat. He says he is feeling good. He looks strong and I’m hoping he can keep it up. He pulls away.

211205_cim_robinAt Mile 16, I’m at 7:52. I feel good and hope that I can keep this up. I hear a familiar voice and look over and see pink…Melissa Penwell! It’s funny seeing her here because she usually is up front chasing down the top women. Today she is pacing her boyfriend and having fun. She might not do the whole race but she’s keeping the option open. We get to catch up a bit and then she’s off.

At Mile 17, I’m at 7:59. Still feeling good though feeling hot. I look over and see Jesuit HS. Cool!

At Mile 18, I’m at 8:03. I’m amazed how good I feel at this pace. It’s so encouraging because I haven’t felt “fast” in a long while! Thank you, Lord!

At Mile 19, I’m at 8:01. I’m enjoying seeing the spectators. I really am having fun! Wonder when Anna started. I bet she’s flying right now! I hope to break 3:25. That would be cool! Got to stay ahead of the 3:25 pace group!

At Mile 20, I’m at 7:59. I can see Melissa ahead. And soon I can also see Elias. That means he’s struggling some. I want to catch up to him so I can encourage him.

At Mile 21, I’m at 8:02. On the bridge cross the American River, I pass Melissa. Her boyfriend is struggling and she’s sticking with him. I tell her I guess this means she’s all in. We laugh.

At Mile 22, I’m at 8:04. I’m on the outskirts of the city. I’ve almost caught up to Elias. I see two mountain bikers following him. I realize that one is his mom Kimberly and the other is the Placer Mtn. Bike club coach Yvette. Kimberly has a blow-up poster of Elias’ face from XC. Love it!

At Mile 23, I’m at 7:59. I’m feeling really strong and I feel confident I can hold this pace to the end. Thanking God for that! I catch Elias and he’s having a tough time. I find out he wants to run the same pace as me so I encourage him to stick with me. I find out he hasn’t eaten anything since before the ½ way point. I encourage him to take something. He falls back some and I grab him a water and wait for him to catch up.

Now we are ap211205_cim_robin_finishproaching the heart of the city!

At Mile 24, I’m at 8:16. Better get back on pace for both of our sakes. I pick it up and look back to see if he is still there. I’m praying he can catch back up.

At Mile 25, I’m at 8:01. Elias is moving back up…so fast in fact he flies by me! Go Elias. I try to pick it up more but it’s not much of a difference.

At Mile 26, I’m at 7:58. I think I’m going to hold off Anna. I make the final turn and head to the finish. I am so grateful to God for the help! I finish just over 3:22! Wow, so amazed! I love you Jesus!

Anna comes in soon after me. She looks great!

Now, got to find the family!

CIM 2021 - Half Marathon with Leah!

I get to the relay exchange, excited to start the CIM relay. Leah, my relay partner, should be almost done with running the first half of the marathon. As I'm waiting, I cheer on Wyatt and Elias, two boys from my cross country team, as they come through running the whole marathon. I then cheer my dad as he hands off to my mom.

I look around for Leah and spot her. I tell her good job, grab the chip, and take off. I'm going to try to run at a steady pace but I'm really excited. So far this feels like the easiest half marathon ever. At first I'm passing a lot of people who are going at a slower pace, but eventually I catch up to around my pack group. As I'm running, I look around for signs. My dad said that there were a lot of funny ones out on the course. They are pretty funny, but there are too many to read! I also enjoy watching the crowd and bands as I'm running. It keeps my mind off the long race ahead. I go by the first aid station and grab some water. I then go back to my pace. My dad said that I should do 8 minute pace for most of it and speed up towards the end. Right now I've been getting around 7:45 and I decide to keep it that way. I'm feeling pretty energized and I try to do a good job of saving energy till the end. I then decide to focus on different running muscles each mile. I first work on pushing off the first mile, then quads the 2nd mile, and arms the 3rd mile. At mile 3, as I'm looking around I see a nice CIM water bottle on the ground without a top. I debate on whether I should pick it up. However, I run by it before I decide.  That's too bad, I'll try to look for something next time that I can get. Not too long after as I am running, I see a nice running water bottle on the ground. While still debating if I should grab it, I run past it! Next time, I tell myself, I should just stop and grab it because they're pretty nice water bottles.

I then see a girl about my age ahead of me. I run to catch up. I introduce myself and find out her name is Maeve. She does cross country also and went to state this year too. She went individually and is a great runner. I also find out this is her second half marathon and she's doing the relay with her mom. I'm really excited that I found someone my speed to run with. I find out that her overall half marathon is faster than mine, so I told her I'll try to stay with her as long as I can. Now I'm going at a faster pace with her at 7:30 min. I think I can hold it to the end because I'm about halfway. We enjoy talking and running together. I hit six miles and grab my gel. I can't wait, it's pomegranate flavored! It tastes good, and then I wash it down with some water at an aid station. As Maeve and I are running, we see the 3:30 pacer group ahead. We run by and pass it. I'm really excited about passing a pacing group and maybe we can catch up to the 3:25 group.

211205_cim_annaMaeve and I continue to run together and we run by her cross country coach. Maeve says hi to him. I then find out that he does 100 mile runs. It's cool to have a cross country coach that understands longer distances.

At the next aid station I grab a banana. It's really good, and I know it will give me some energy for the end of the race. I’m now at 9 miles and can take my next gel. However I'm so close to finishing that I don't want to take another one. We're both starting to pick up the pace now as we get close to the end. I can start to see the city come into view. All I have to do is get into the city and I'll be done with the race. I have less than 4 miles left. Maeve and I can now see the 3:25 our group. Yay, I get to pass another pacing group!

I'm now starting to look for my mom and Elias. My mom had a head start and I thought that I could possibly catch her. For Elias, this is his first marathon and he won't be going as fast as he normally does. I keep my eye out for them as I go over a bridge. On the other side we go through a tunnel that has the sign saying,”Welcome CIM runners.” I'm almost done!

We're into the city now. I'm now starting to drop Maeve and I hope she keeps up the pace. I have 2 miles left to go and I'm pushing it. I'm starting to feel the classic marathon pains as my knees, hips, and feet are starting to be sore. I push through the pain. Normally XC racing pain hurts really bad and I don’t like it, but for me long distance pain is my favorite. I love pushing through it. I enjoy pushing myself and picking up the pace, getting below 7 minutes. I keep my eye out for the Christmas tree which I know I can see before I finish. I still have a mile and a half to go, but I keep up the fast pace. As I’m running, I see a guy sprint pass me as he gives a push towards the end of the race. However, after a while I catch back up to him. He does this a few more times, I guess he's more of a sprinter than a distance runner.

I keep pushing with less than a mile to go! My whole body hurts, but I know I'm really close. I can see more and more people and move my legs faster and faster. Up ahead I see the runners turning. I know the finish line is around the corner! I push around the corner and push towards the finish line. As I’m running, I remember how God helped me run a race without my hip interfering with my running, not letting me roll a ankle, giving me energy, giving me pain I like to push through and a friend to run with. I give Him the Glory that He deserves when I finish. I feel very grateful for the race He gave me! I see mom and we congratulate each other. I wait for Maeve and cheer her on. I couldn’t have run that fast without her. I told her good job and that she still could have beat me because I could have had a head start with the relay lineup. She did such a good job. God overall blessed our team with a 3:25:32! I also ran a negative split the last mile from the first!

Praise the Lord for He is Good, His Love Endures Forever
