Angela James, Bernadette Frager, Cerissa Patterson, Daniel Patterson, Julie Jones, Karen Nickel, Kim Young, Lora Spangler, Marilyn Watson-Terrazas, Michelle Ladcani, Michelle Ridder, Rich Alesci, Robin Soares, Ruben Moreno, Scott Eckardt, Stephanie Holloway, Suzi Mattish, Troy Outman, Robin Soares

There is plenty of motivation and energy for this race.  Robin spent a year planning for and preparing other runners for this marathon.  19 friends (including us) are here in Napa psyched up and ready to take on the challenge together!  And she'll get 21 more by the end of the year to reach her birthday goal of having 40 friends doing a marathon the year she turns 40. "40 @ 40".

Being a part of this is very exciting.  I have my own goal today of 3:15 (7:27 pace).  My running partner, Troy, is also shooting for that so the 2 of us will work together.  This was my goal at my 2011 marathon.  I missed it by about 3 minutes.  I've done the training correctly so it should be possible today.  The weather is good, 50-55 and overcast.  Robin & I & friends get on the bus for the start.

We're a little behind arriving because our bus made 2 wrong turns.  First thing to do.. stand in the porta-potty lines.  Then assemble at the start for pictures.  Wow!  Everyone's here and appears ready.  Richie Alesci finds us.  We're excited to see if he can break 3hrs.  Karen, Stephanie, Troy and Laura are here from the track.  And many others.  My main concern these last few weeks has been my left hamstring.  I stretch it some more but it's feeling the best it has all month.  After a group shot, a prayer, and dropping off our sweats, we line up and face towards Napa.

An older age-group course-record holder performs a great National Anthem.  It's followed by someone saying a type of "prayer". It's always important to us, especially at a race, to take time to pray, as our Savior, Jesus Christ, demonstrated in the Bible.  We bowed our heads to honor Christ, but was the speaker honoring Christ?  The prayer was about our efforts being good in our eyes and the eyes of those around us.  Wasn't any mention of God or Jesus.  At the end I hear Robin quietly say "..in Jesus' name."  That was a good reminder that if we don't know who the speaker is praying to, we can still acknowledge who we are praying to.  So, after that bit of awkwardness, and knowing God is with us, we count down and hit the road! Go!

140302_napa_marathon_troy_troyRichie disappears ahead.  Troy & I move ahead of Robin & Karen, dodging a lot of slower runners.  After a mile we've settled into a 7:25 pace.  The plan is to start at 7:22 and slow to 7:27 by the 1/2 way point.  We did our 20mi training runs around 8:50 pace so this does feel quite a bit faster.  We're talking & joking & reflecting.  Troy had a chronic injury up to 10 wks before this but thank the Lord it's been ok ever since.  Still, it's a question mark.  My hamstring is feeling fine!  Thanks, Lord.  Troy jokes that he thinks out of the 2 of us, Troy will win.  But I say that Troy is stronger, although Troy does have more experience.  It's a good laugh.

We slow on the ups and speed up on the downs. Trying to maintain heart rate and stay relaxed.  My body usually falls apart (hurts a lot) those last 6 mi so it's important to run as efficiently and smart as possible early on.  The steep camber of the winding road is difficult on the legs.  We don't want to run longer than necessary, we want to run the tangents.  But that's the steepest, most uncomfortable part of the road.

5mi: (7:18 average) My Garmin isn't tracking with the mile markers.  It's getting further ahead.  About .01mi for each marker.  It does have trouble sometimes.  This means my pace may not be right so I switch to using the course markers to determine pace.  That's why we've now gone down to 7:18 pace (according to the Garmin).

7mi: I'm drinking at each aid station, alternating water & sports drink (gatorade).  I start to feel a little nauseous.  Immediate I recall the dreaded final miles of the 2011 marathon where my stomach was sick.  It might be the Gatorade so no more of that. Just water.  At 7.5mi it's time for a nature break - I run ahead, hide in some bushes, and then catch back up to Troy.  This goes well and the faster pace isn't too hard to do.  Troy keeps a very steady pace.

8mi: (7:20 average) Pace is scary fast compared to our 8:50 long runs.  But the mile markers indicate 7:25 which is more on schedule.

10mi:  At this point it should feel easy.  I admit to Troy that it's not feeling as easy as I hoped.  He feels the same.  I'm very motivated and energized and don't feel like this will be a problem, but I am concerned that if I push the legs too hard, they will break down.  Hamstring is still good.  Feeling a little leg strain due to my feet moving in my shoes.  I'm using different socks, some Sport Slick on my toes, and the laces might be a little lose.  All this is making for less stability.  I pray that Robin is feeling ok with her sensitive hamstrings.

11mi: 7:33 (7:22 average) Troy  is feeling a pain in his knee.

12mi: 7:37 (7:23 average) We're slowing a bit too much.  I tell Troy let's put in one more fast 7:20 mile before the 13.1 mark and then slow it down a little.

13mi: 7:33 (7:24 average). At the 1/2 way, according to the markers we're at a 3:16:30 (7:30) pace.  Need to bring it down somehow..

14mi: 7:40 (7:25 average)  I have to go again.  I run ahead to the porta-potty at the aid station, and then run fast to catch up to Troy.  Up ahead I see a woman with a very long-stride that's been running near us for a while.  I ask Troy if he thinks we can catch up to her but he doesn't think so.  I realize now that our paces are going to be different.  It always helps me a lot running with Troy but it's best if we run our own race at this point.

14.8mi: (7:26 ave) I pray for Troy's race.  He prays for others in our group with pains.  Then we part ways. He adjusts to a 3:30 pace and I still feel confident with the  3:15.  I ramp up to 7:20 pace and push ahead.  I talk to the "long-stride" woman briefly.  She's amazingly relaxed for maintaining those big leaps.  Up ahead I see Steve & Ann cheering!  It's a great boost.

16mi: 7:23.  Going good but after this little hill I need to pick it up more if I'm going to hit mile 20 in time (2:39) to finish at 3:15.  Suddenly my right quad starts to cramp.  A small adductor muscle on the inside of my quad is strained and threatening to go completely.  This is not good.  If it gets worse and goes completely, I'll be walking.  Not only will my goal of 3 yrs be lost, but sub 3:30, or even sub 4:00.

16.7mi: I stop to quickly 140302_napa_marathon_troy2stretch the quad. The long-stride woman goes by.  It's drizzling pretty good now as I work to catch back up while not straining the quad at the same time.  The stretch didn't help.  It hurts every step.  I realize there is only one hope.. that if it's God's will, He'll keep it together and allow me to finish strong.  I start praying continuously and trying to have faith.  I try to recite Psalm 23 (Troy had brought it up earlier).  Oh how I look forward to "laying down in green pastures" and resting after this is over.

19mi: Amazingly God is keeping it together and somehow giving me good 7:12 miles! I eat my 2nd Hammer Gel.  I'm actually glad to be on the mile 20 hill.  The leg hurts but if I can get over this, it's all downhill!

20mi: 7:12 (7:24 ave) Wow, so far so good!  Just a little more to the top (which is at 20.3mi officially, or 20.5 according to my Garmin).  Top of the hill!  I stretch and try to massage the strained quad in hopes of flying down and making up time.  But as I descend every step hurts worse then ever.  On my own I can't imagine getting to the end with this pain.  But God is faithful and I keep praying.  I imagine it's a dream where my legs are moving and I can continue this movement forever.  I try to distance myself from the pain.

22mi: The last 2 were 7:33 pace.  I've changed my goal to 3:17:30 (to beat my 2011 marathon).  I eat a banana thinking Potassium will help.

140302_napa_marathon_troy23mi: 8:00.  Uh oh. This may be the best I can manage to the end.  My legs are hurting or cramping all over.  It's hard to smile.  I see Steve and Ann cheering for me and it makes me smile.  They're the only spectators around.  After a high-5 and turning the corner, I suddenly start feeling a little better and push the little hill after the bridge.  Thanks, God, maybe there is hope of going faster.  I eat another banana piece.

24mi:  7:52. I'm thanking the Lord for making the quad hang in there.  Now I think of many easy 2mi runs I've done so that this last stretch doesn't feel so bad.  But the main strategy that works is to think of nothing else but the goal for the next mile.

25mi: 7:47. Yes!  Just a final mile "at the track" and it's over.  I'm hurting so much and want to stop.  I'm hoping the course is marked wrong and will finish earlier according to my Garmin.  I have complete faith now that God has helped my quad continue and that I should push harder.. it won't fail.  There are more spectators and they're great.  I'm pushing harder. My Garmin says .5mi left.  The markers say .8 left.

140302_napa_marathon_troy_finish26mi: 7:36 (7:28 average).  Can't believe it, almost done.  The pain is still there but the realization that God answered my prayers and hearing the crowds cheering helps me rise above it.  I run as fast as I can.  Every second is going to count…  with a 6:50 pace for the last 1/2 mile (26.5 on my Garmin), I finish!  3:17:34.

Thank you, Lord!  For a while I thought all the goals were done.  But I beat my 2011 marathon time and was pretty close to my goal.  6 miles ago, with the quad pain, I couldn't picture running the rest of the way, but God helped me do it.  I just need to remember that, not just for marathons, but for any tough struggle in life - even if it looks impossible, God can bring me through with a surprisingly great ending.

What a fun and exciting day!  I get to run a marathon with Troy and 17 of my friends.  Unfortunately 5 friends are missing because of injury.  Thanks to the Napa Marathon organizers, all of them are able to move their races to next year!  This all started when I put out a challenge months ago called 40 @ 40.  The goal was to inspire 40 people, including Troy and myself, to run a marathon.  Today marks the first step and there will be 21 more folks completing a marathon this year while I’m 40.   After everyone finishes, I have special 40 @ 40 “finisher” hats along with cake pops made by my buddy Karen who is one of the 17 today.

I’m also excited to see all the supporters on course.  There will be spouses, kids and parents.  My cousin Ann and her husband Steve will also be there.  They flew up to cheer us on and we’ve had so much fun hanging out. They are part of the 40 @ 40 crew and will be doing the LA Marathon next week with their daughter.  This is a good opportunity for them to see how a marathon looks and works.

Most of the group meets up at the start for a picture and prayer.  Some folks are stuck in the bathroom line but we pray for them.  I can tell there is excitement and great anticipation in our group!

I line up with Karen and Troy2 (my Troy and Troy Outman).  Another 40 @ 40 friend, Rich Alesci, comes up to say hi.  He's here on little sleep because his wife, my college roomie, had a baby 3 weeks ago.  But he’s still hoping for a sub 3hour and I’m certain he can do it.

I’m planning on doing a 7:42 pace, which if maintained will get me under 3:24.  I know I have the ability to do that, but are my hamstrings ready for it?  After the National Anthem is sung by the 75-79 & 80-84 age group marathon record holder, it’s time!

Ready, set, go!  We are off!  Troy2 takes off but I know I’ll be seeing them for a few miles.  As usual it feels good and even easy but I know that will change later.  Karen starts out with me but decides to pull back and run her goal pace…smart to stick with the plan!  The weather is perfect, cool and overcast.

At 5K, I’m averaging 7:45. It’s not 7:42 but I think that was a bit unrealistic anyway.  It seems like many are moving past me but I don’t panic because it’s just the beginning.  My hamstrings feel tight and are hurting some.  Will they hang in there?

At 10K, I’m still averaging 7:45 despite a good climb on the last mile.  Troy2 is long gone and I’m praying that they are feeling good. I see Season Eckart’s dad and wave. He’s waiting for his son-in-law Scott, who’s part of the 40@40.  I am looking for more familiar faces at roads that make a T with the course.  I know there are many waiting down the road!

I see a girl in black ahead of me and she’s definitely keeping the same pace.  I catch up and try to stay with her.  Another chatty girl comes up and asks us if we are going for 3:30.  I say “yeah” because I don’t want to presume that 3:25 is going to happen.  But maybe I’m misleading her?  I wish I had said 3:25 now but better just keep focusing on what’s ahead.

140302_napa_marathon_robinAt the Half Marathon, I’m averaging 7:46 which is still good.  My hamstrings are starting to get really sore.  This is going to get harder!  I take my first gel.

I see Ann and Steve and give them a big smile and high five.  I also see Season and her kiddos and wave to them as well.

At 16 miles my average is 7:48 and I’m in trouble.  My hamstrings hurt so bad along with my right calf that I’m unable to push the pace and just try to go the best I can.  Unlike the Davis Stampede 1/2 where I was getting frustrated and focused on myself, I am looking to God and trusting in Him.  It’s out of my control and I just need to keep a good attitude.

I see Stephanie Holloway’s family and Karen’s family and give them smiles and high fives.  I also see some photographers and I give big smiles to them too.  I know God is proud of me and I’m giving my best.

Pretty soon Karen is back with me and looking strong.  I tell her about my hamstrings but not to wait for me.  I want her to meet her goal and who knows, maybe we’ll finish together.  She says she’s praying for me and continues on.

At 18 miles my average is at 7:51. I take another Hammer gel.  The pain continues and I’m getting passed by groups of runners.  I try to latch on to some folks but cannot make it stick…I’m at the mercy of my legs!  I start praying hard and calling out to Jesus in a whisper…as a song I love says, “just say Jesus, there is power in the Name”…I repeat Jesus, Jesus.  I also tell him to let the other runners get their goals over my own.  I can see Karen up ahead and am praying she’s feeling good.

Every so often my legs feel like they can handle a push and I’m able to pick it up.  Mile 19 and 20 are like that but then the pain ratchets up.  I know that we turn off the Silverado Trail soon and I’m thinking it’s at mile 20 but it comes and goes.

Finally, after mile 22, I can see we are turning.  I’m glad that I have less than 4 to go!  I’m ready to be done!  Ann and Steve are waiting for me!  It’s a great boost.  I smile big and wave.

As I turn, I feel like I can push again.  It’s painful but I can push.  Thank You Jesus! Karen seems to be getting closer…it would be cool to catch her!

At mile 24, I’m over 8 min pace.  I don’t mind because I can still push!  I turn another corner and see Troy Outman walking.  Just before I catch him he starts running and I tell him good job.  We 140302_napa_marathon_robin_finishrun together for a few strides and I encourage him to hang in there.

Mile 25, Karen is getting closer.  I make another turn and she’s right there but I doubt I can close the gap in the last mile.  I shout “go Karen go”.  I hope she can hear me!

The finish is so close and my legs are so done but the Lord is giving me a boost so I can keep pushing.  I get to the finish chute and a girl comes up behind but I dig down and sprint ahead.  I cross the line and smile…thank You, Jesus!  We did it!

Davis Stampede 1/2 Marathon (Troy)

Date/Location:
February 9, 2014 – Davis, Ca
Distance:
Half Marathon – 13.1 miles
Time:
1:28:14
Place:
3rd (M45-49)

Other Teammates:

Anna Soares, Ariel Soares, Jan Heidt, Robin Soares

This 1/2 Marathon is a great prep for our Napa Marathon next month.  Anna, Ariel and Grammie are also looking forward to racing shorter distances.  Grammie and Papa are visiting from San Diego.  We all head to Davis in a heavy downpour.  We've got the rain jackets and are prepared for the worst.

As the race is about to start, the rain has stopped and the temperature is great.  Robin and I line up first and give our gear to Robin's dad, Jerry.  Jan and Anna will run next in the 5k.  Later Ariel will run the 1/2mi race.

140209_stampede_halfmara_troy_robin_start2Go!  Unfortunately my Garmin didn't start so my stopwatch is all I've got.  Immediately I realize we're both going to be too warm.  We were planning for being drenched so wore rash-guards (very warm) and gloves.  But it's dry and we're heating up.  We stay with the 1:30 group.  This has been Robin's goal although we really didn't plan it out well.  My goal is go under 1:30 but I don't know how much.

1mi: We're on pace, but I think it's a little more difficult then it should be for Robin.

2mi: Robin is falling back a little and I'm trying to push forward ahead of the group.

3mi: I want to run a 1:28 (6:43 pace).  I'm slowly working my way up.  About 25 secs behind.  We round a neighborhood park and I see Robin off the back of her group and realize 1:30 wasn't a good pace.  Should have been 1:35.  I yell back to Robin that she's doing great and to think about Napa (so that she doesn't hurt herself).

4mi: Now we head a mile down E. Covell Blvd.  I'm more than 30 secs off of 1:28 pace so really trying to pick it up while also being careful not to hurt my left hamstring.  Just like the Turkey Trot here, I'm having to focus on "pulling through" my right leg using my abs.

5mi: That mile went well. Now through the neighborhoods again and then north to the golf course.  With the wind behind us I'm able to get a little closer to the 1:28 pace.

6mi: 6:47 average. 24 secs behind 1:28. Now East along the golf course on gravel with a side wind.  I work hard to bridge the gap and get in a runner's draft.  Then I leap-frog up to the next runner.  Also trying to pick the straightest lines along the gravel road.  I'm keeping pace but still behind 1:28.

7mi: Now we turn south into the wind.  I draft another guy for a while and then he drops back to draft off of me.  Working together helps keep us both motivated to stay the pace.  Now we take the serpentine path under Covell Blvd, where I dropped my gel last year and strained my hamstring picking it up.  I'm careful to eat and drink without dropping anything this time.

8mi: With the head-wind, I didn't gain on 1:28 pace that last mile.  But now it's protected and I gotta work to move up.  I keep my eye on runners ahead.. working up to them and passing.  We go around another park and soon we'll hit the overpass where my hamstring pulled last time.

9mi: 20 secs behind.  That was a good effort.  Now up and over the pedestrian bridge.  I'm tired and legs are sore.  I'm very attentive to my hamstrings.  Trying to push but not injure.  Down the ramp.. going down is even more hazardous to a hamstring.  Onto the short out-n-back section.. careful on the sharp turn.

140209_stampede_halfmara_troy10mi:  6:46 average. 30 secs behind.  The hamstring is hanging in there.  I'm looking forward to being done. This is where I had to start walking last year.  It's tender but I'm still going fast… need to knock off 10secs a mile.  I've been thanking God along the way and realizing how dependent I am on Him in everything.  Nothing is a sure thing.  But with Him I know the outcome is best.  I just have to follow His lead rather than making it all about me.

11mi: 2 more miles.  I encourage some 10k runners I'm passing.  I just have to get through this mile and then I can pretend I'm back at our track workout with 1 mile to go.  I can always do 1 last mile…

12mi: Here we go.. final mile.. under the highway, under the train tracks, across the parking lot and now only 1 turn to go!  I think I can make 1:28.  I see a female coach running to cheer on her athlete finishing the 10k.  The coach is jumping, cheering, full of energy, trying to lead her 140209_stampede_halfmara_troy_finishagonizing athlete into the final turn.  I don't know if making it look so easy is helping much.  Her athlete is in pain, but hopefully will keep it up to the finish.

13mi:  There it is!  Thanks God for helping me the whole way.  I finish in 1:28:14 (6:44) and immediately see Anna and Grammie waiting for me.  They did great in the 5k!  I pray for Robin's final miles and wait to see how she perseveres.  I know it's going to be hard because the first 3 miles were too fast, but I also know she'll fight to the end.  God is good!

It’s been a fun weekend with my parents visiting and the start of the Olympics!  My Mom and I just celebrated our birthdays together on Friday.  We are both aging up today…she is moving up to the 75-79 category and I’m moving up to the 40-44 category.  I felt so easy going about aging but doubts are creeping in.  I am amped to try and go for a PR and run sub 1:30 today.  I’ve put in the distance training and speed work…but probably not enough speed work.  It has been raining like crazy but it seems like we are going to get a break so cannot use that as an excuse for missing the goal.
Anna and my Mom are running the 5K together & Ariel is hanging out with Papa until her 1/2 mi race.  Troy and I say goodbye to them and get on the starting line.  There are pacers here and I ask Troy if I should try and stay with the 1:30 group.  He says yes.  As the countdown begins, Troy’s Garmin has yet start up and be ready.  I tell him to get his regular watch ready.
140209_stampede_halfmara_troy_robin_startReady, set, go!  Right off the line the pace feels fast but I try to relax and tuck in behind the 1:30 group.  Troy is with me and since his goal is to go faster than me I ask him why.  With a smile he says “Anna told me to make sure you’re okay for the first mile.”  Aww, what a sweet girl!
Mile 1 is 6:39.  Troy takes off and I hang on to the pacer.  I feel way over my head but I push anyway hoping to just survive!  Thank God that there is no rain!  I’m getting really hot in my long FCA top with the tight rash guard underneath.  We were expecting the rain and the chill that comes with being wet but that isn't the case.
Mile 2 is 6:54.   Wow, this is tough!  I feel like I’m overheating and my energy is burning up quick!  I don’t think I can keep this up but I’m determined to go after my goal!
Mile 3 is 6:53.  I decide to back off the pace…it’s just too quick and I’m not even close to the halfway point.  I’m feeling upset for not being able to do it and for not starting out more conservatively…such a contradiction.  If I can just stay ahead of the 1:35 pace group, that would be good!
Mile 4 is 7:14.  Hanging in there but already feeling wasted. Maybe I’m really feeling my age now.  Maybe my best years are behind me.
Mile 5 is 7:20.  More people are passing me and I’m getting more frustrated.  But I’m still ahead of the 1:35 group!
Mile 6 is is 7:15.  We turn off the road onto a dirt path that runs behind a golf course.  It’s uneven and hard for me to keep a good rhythm.  I hear a bunch of foot steps behind me and dread the worst…they’ve caught me!  Sure enough, the 1:35 pacer flies by and I cannot react.
Mile 7 is 7:48.  I can feel myself spiraling into a state of negativity.  All I can think is this stinks!  I take a Hammer gel.
Mile 8 is 8:05.  God reminds me that I’m wearing my FCA gear and that I’m competing for Him.  All I’ve been thinking about is myself.  I begin to pray and cry out to Him in my head.  He reminds me that I tell Ariel to say “CAN” instead of can’t.  I CAN!  I feel my attitude turning around and I have more energy!  I start pulling away from some runners that came up on me.
Mile 9 is 7:24.  Thank you Jesus for helping me get going again through Your Encouragement and Power!  I feel more relaxed and optimistic that anything can happen! I make it to the only hill on the course, the overpass across 80.  My pace slows down but I keep looking to Him and I am joyful.
140209_stampede_halfmara_robin2Mile 10 is 7:50.  3 more miles!  I CAN do this with the Lord!
At the next Aid Station, the volunteers are not holding out cups so I grab one off a table.  It’s empty and too late to grab again unless I want to turn around and go back.  No way, I want to keep moving forward.  I feel the frustration and anger flare up in an instant.  Lord, please help me keep focused on you!
Mile 11 is 7:26.  Thank you Jesus!  Almost done.  I’m fighting my flesh to keep looking to the Lord.  I CAN do this!
140209_stampede_halfmara_robin_finishMile 12 is 7:40.  I’m hurting and my legs are really tight.  I CAN with You Lord, I CAN!
I see the last aid station and call out for Gatorade.  No one steps forward until I pass by.  Again, the frustration hits but I look right back at Jesus.
The finish line seems so far away but I push as hard as I can.
Mile 13 is 7:46.  I turn the corner and look for my family.  I see Troy and smile and he says “great smile”.  I cross the line and am so relieved it’s over!  Wow, that was hard physically and emotionally!  I finish and thank Jesus for helping me!

140209_stampede_kids_ariel2I ate breakfast.  Had to hurry to the starting line.  I'm happy and not scared.  We started.  Anna is running with me.  Daddy, too.  I feel like I'm running fast.  I'm smiling.  Daddy says I'm doing good.  It's raining just a little and I like the wetness on me when I feel hot.  It's getting tiring now.  Here comes the finish line.  Yay! They give me a ribbon for finishing.  I'm glad to back with my parents and Grammie &140209_stampede_kids_ariel_finish2 Papa.  I'm glad they were watching me run.

Anna's 5k Race.

140209_stampede_5k_anna_grammy_startMy Mom & Dad put a trashbag over me to keep me dry from the rain. Luckily it's not raining right now.  I pray with my family.  I have a lot of energy right now.  I do a little stretching.  The race director says, "10, 9, 8, 7, … 1.. Go!"  I start running.  I run with Grammie until we cross the starting line then I run ahead by myself.

1mi: My legs are starting to really hurt now.

1.5mi: I come to an aid station and give them my trash bag and drink140209_stampede_5k_anna a cup of water.

2mi: I see the finish line, but the cones make us turn another way and continue running.  I'm getting very tired.  I'm glad I didn't get cramps this time, but my legs did hurt the whole time.

140209_stampede_5k_anna_finish3mi:  I turn and see the finish line up ahead.  I'm running as fast as I can to get there!  I was really happy that I finished.  I wait for Grammie to also finish.  I wait about 6 min and then I see her.  I give her a hug when she finishes.  We both did good.  I was 4th and Grammie was 2nd.

Every New Year's we get together with friends and push ourselves in a challenge of hills.  I haven't done much hill training this season, but a few months ago Robin helped motivate me so I was able to get some good training going into today's challenge.

We all meet at the Auburn Overlook.  Robin & myself, Karen Nickel, David Malicoat, Charity Marshall, Kayden Kelly, Jesse Warda, Flor Hodges, Jeff Brooks, and Charles Davis.  Always impressive seeing the group materialize early on January 1st after staying up late the night before.  Dedicated!  Unfortunately, one of the top climbers, our friend, Lance, can't ride this morning as he's recovering from his bike accident.  But we'll see him at his house for the post-race party.  We pray and get on the road.

New Years Challenge Hill Climbs
First we ride a warm-up loop up Millertown Rd and then head down to the Confluence to prepare for the first climb.  I've been working on creating a starting order that gives all of us the maximum motivation to excel on the climb.  The goal is to stagger the start in order to get the riders as close as possible 2/3 up the hill where the road levels out.  In this way, the strategy of drafting could come into play as an equalizer with 1 mile to go.

I spent a lot of time working formulas and national averages, but time ran out this morning and I had to use the starting order I had without reviewing it.

Rob Hodges (Flor's husband) is at the start with the clipboard and stopwatch sending us off on timed intervals.  Right off the bat, some of the participants see a glitch in the order.  Rider's stats were based on Strava PR's where possible which resulted in Charity Marshall starting first.  A closer review of this and I would have remembered that Charity has become a very strong rider quickly, not indicative of the slow Strava time she recorded at the beginning of the year.  Charles was right when he quickly commented, "No one's catching her."  Charity was on her own to the top.  The rest of us remained in closer contact.

I'm starting last.  My goal is to get a Strava PR. I'll need sub 15 min.  Karen, Leslie Hackett, Robin & I did 3 repeats up this hill months ago and I learned a lot about going faster.  One tip was standing up more.  I'm pumped, I'm ready, time to go!

The first pitch is tough.  I focus on lifting my legs so they don't waste energy working against each other.  Up ahead is Charles, Jeff, Kayden and David.  It really helps having riders to work towards.  I work really hard, encouraging each one as I go by.

At the 2/3 point when the road levels out, I pass Robin and she tries to latch on for a little bit.  Good job, Robin!  I have a mile left and give it all I've got on the flat section and then the final climb.  15:17!  My fastest time for the New Years Challenges, but shy of my Strava PR.  Still an improvement over the last 3 months.

Everyone worked hard up this tough climb.  After a photo we cruise down to the Foresthill Bridge to finish off with the shorter climb.  We paceline across the bridge, in order of fastest times up the first climb, and then go for it up Raley's Hill.  Immediately, Kayden and Jesse pass me.  I'm determined to stay on their wheels.  But they're pulling ahead.  I can't hold on although I'm doing everything well.  I sprint to the top in 3rd and gather in the Raley's parking lot to catch my breath.  On the 1st hill it was me, Jesse & Kayden.  On the 2nd hill it was reversed: Kayden, Jesse, and me.

Whew!  Glad the bike climbing is done.  Now have to get back and recover for the 10mi Run.

Resolution 10mi Run
Last time I did the 10mi Run, I bonked at 3mi and struggled the rest of the way.  This time Robin reminds me to fuel up and I also spend a good portion of time stretching and rolling on the roller.  I'm going to go into this prepared this time.

We all gather back at the Overlook and it's a great reunion with many friends.  The cyclist have turned runners (Karen, Kayden, Jesse, Robin & myself).  The Relays have tagged their runners (David Malicoat tagging Dave Campbell, Charity Marshall tagging Stephanie Holloway).  And then there are many reunions with other Auburn friends here to start the New Year out right: Jim Cranney, Tom Barrett, Bryan Hacker, Mo Bartley, Scott & Season Eckardt, Jesse Ellis, Gary Carpenter, and others.

Kids that we know from top Skyridge School Jog-A-Thon runners are here.  Leah & Emerson Booth, Will & Celie Cranney and Mason Kelly.  Anna is doing the 5k and appears well prepared.  She wants to try for a medal but knows the important thing is just to try your best.  Her previous best was 5th place.

140101_resolutionrun_startAfter an FCA Endurance prayer, we all start together.  Anna and Mason take off and get far ahead of me.  As does Dave Campbell.  Dave is pretty amazing.  10 years older than me and he'll get to the bottom of this hill a minute ahead of me.  As we start down the old road, splitting off from the 5k & 10k runners, I look but can't see Anna and Mason.  I hope they do well.

2km: 6:09 pace.  This was the first descent down to the gravel road.  The road levels out a little.  With me is Jesse Warda and Kayden Kelly.  Ahead of me is Mo and Jesse Ellis.  Ahead of them appears to be the lead woman who I don't recognize.  And farther than I can see is Dave… just flying down this course.  I'm trying to remain relaxed and efficient.  Mile 3 is my focus.

2-4km: 6:27 pace.  This was the flat gravel section followed by the long downhill.  Now it's time for the big climb.  I pull ahead of the group I'm with and try to stay light and fluid on the rocky trail up to the top.  Last time I went too hard and bonked at the top.  I'm hoping it goes better this time.  At the top I'm feeling much better than the previous time and start across the flat section.

4-6km: 8:22 pace.  This was the steep climb following by the flat.  Now I have a little climb to the intersection and then a steep descent down the dam road to the beginning of the trails.  I see that fast woman ahead.  I'm amazed at the pace she maintains down the hill even though my legs are longer (this girl, Baily, turned out to be only 17 yrs old and finished only a minute behind the winning woman. Later she and her family joined us at track workouts.  She's got incredible talent.).

6-8km: 6:43 pace. This was the steep descent down the dam road and onto the fire road, to the bottom of the course.  Now for a short steep climb and then rollers around Robie Point.  My heart-rate gets pushed way up again, but soon I'm getting under control on the rollers.

8-10km: 8:05 pace.  This was the steep switch-backs up to the main trail and out to Robie Point.  Now it's out to the turn-around and back.  I see runners coming back now.  There's Dave, and Bryan Hacker.  Bryan is flying and motivates me to get ready to pick it up.  I happily make the turn and start digging to catch up to Dave.  I see Robin! She says to catch Dave!

10-12km: 6:58 pace.  This was from Robie Point to the turn-around and back.  Now to climb up and over Robie Point.  This climb hurts.  Heart-rate getting higher.  No sign of Dave Campbell.  I really thought I'd make up some time on him with this effort.

12-14km: 7:33 pace.  This was up and over Robie Point and along the Western States Trail.  Only a mile left.  But it's uphill to the finish.  I'm giving it everything I have.  The last part is steep, dusty and getting warm.  My heart-rate is at 98% max, the highest yet.  My legs feel wobbly.. about to bonk.. but that's ok because there's less than a 1/2mi to go!  I don't see Dave but I push with everything I got.. trying to beat 1:10.

14-15.6km: 9:12 pace.  This was the final mile to the finish.  It was my slowest pace yet and the hardest section for me.  I finished in 1:11:20, 7th overall, but actually 1st in the 40-49.  Turned out the older age group was much faster.  This was a huge improvement over my last attempt.  The stretching and fueling helped a lot.  But most importantly, my biggest help comes from the Lord.  He reminds me to encourage others despite the pain I'm feeling.  And I know I'm a winner 140101_resolutionrun_annano matter what place I get when I make the effort for Him.

It was an exciting day for many in our group as multiple PR's and awards were achieved.  Anna did get her medal, her first placing in a running race.  She was really amazed to get it.

Part 1: The Bike

What a beautiful morning!  It’s a bit cold but couldn’t ask for better weather!  Still, it’s hard to get out of bed and I think “is it really worth it?”  But again, “how can I miss out on starting the year right?!”

I make it to Overlook before Troy since he had to stay back to adjust his calculations for today’s start times on the bike.  I’m excited to see that Karen and Jesse are already there!  Folks trickle in and then it’s time to go. Before we start, Troy says a prayer for all of us which I really appreciate.  It reminds me of how thankful that the Lord protected our friend Lance Loveday when he was recently hit by a car.  We will miss him this year but know he’ll be back to dominate in the future!

The pre-ride to Old Foresthill is shorter which I like since it means there will be time to get home and some food in our tummies before the Resolution Run.  We do climb up Millertown Road on the way which is tough but I purposely hold back and just let the legs adjust.

Soon we are bombing down Hwy 49 to the Confluence.  I descend my best but still behind the rest of the gang since I’m still chicken going fast on curvy roads.  Maybe the New Year will bring even better descending for me.

We regroup at the bottom and I peel off most of my layers and give them to Rob Hodges, our official timer for the morning.  Burr, I’m cold, let’s get this show on the road!

We line up and Charity takes off with a big lead.  She will be hard to catch.  As I have a few moments to think, I remind myself of the goal to break the 17-min barrier on this hill.  That means no slacking…I need to be pushing hard the whole way.  Ugh, this all sounded great when I made the goal a few months ago but now after staying up late for New Years, this doesn’t seem so great.  I know that with focus on Christ, I can put in a good effort.

David takes off, then Karen, and then Flor.  A few seconds later it’s  “Ready, set, go!”  From the get-go, I push hard.  The body is whining but I ignore it.  I try to ride efficiently…pulling up on the pedals and sitting up tall.  After a few minutes I start to feel better…thanks God!  I catch up to Flor, then David.  Karen is still out there as a carrot and I just try to close the gap.  I can see Charity way up the mtn.  I won’t catch her but I hope someone else does so she can be pushed harder.

Once I get just past the Mammoth Bar area, I know it gets better.  I catch up to Karen and tell her good job.  I’m barely able to talk so I know I’m pushing hard.  Jesse goes by and I try to jump on his wheel.  Too fast!  I manage to say “catch Charity”.

I make it to the “flat section” and Troy goes by and tells me to get on his wheel.  I barely hang on for a few minutes but it’s enough I think to help me get my goal.  “Go Troy!  Catch Jesse!”.

Almost done!  I look at my Garmin and I have under 2 minutes to get to the top under 17 minutes.  Come on, go!  I push as hard as I can.  As I make it to the last turn, my timer is ticking…16:20, 16:30, 16:40…Dig!  I cross the line at 16:48!  Wow, thank You Jesus!  I cannot believe it!

Everyone finishes hard and seems to be happy with their results.  The New Year is off to a great start already!

We bike to the Foresthill Bridge for one last climb.  We line up with the fastest at front and pace line across the bridge.  Once we get across, it’s every man and woman for their self.  Troy, Jesse and Kayden are leading the way and they duke it out to the top.  Flor is right behind me and goes by me like I’m standing still.  I give all that I  have to catch her.  I’m with her for a moment and then she finds another gear and zooms away.  Wow, awesome!  And, she hasn’t been on the bike in a while…a natural talent for sure!

I make it to the top and I am done!  Yeah!  I rush home to let our babysitter, Celie, get home so she can get ready to do the Resolution Run, too with her family.

Part 2: The Resolution Run 10 Miler

This year, Troy, Anna & I have properly fueled for this race.  It’s easy to improve on that based on what we did in the past. Troy didn’t eat anything after the ride when he last did the 10 miler 2 years ago and unfortunately bonked around Mile 2.  Anna ate too much before in years past and got terrible cramps within the first mile of her 5K.  Last year I ate very little before and trained little so I bonked early on.  2014 is going to be a banner year I hope!

I drop off Ariel at our friend’s house (the Marshalls) and run to the starting line.  My legs are definitely tired from the hard effort on the bike so they will be the question mark today.  I get there and see so many familiar faces from our weekly track group…cool!

Troy, Anna, Karen, her friend Becky and I pray before the race starts.  Another reminder that this race is about His glory and not mine.  Time to go!  Anna head towards the back of the pack with Mason and his mom Christine to get in a better spot.  I hope they have fun today.  Anna is usually tougher when I’m not there and will hopefully not complain too much.

Ready, set, go!  As we get going, I run into a few more track folks like Jesse Ellis.  Karen and I are racing the same run event together for the first time surprisingly. I tell her that sub-8min pace is a sub 1:20…something to think about.  As we head over to the China Bar Rec area, she pulls ahead.  She sure can run smoothly downhill like a deer.  I try not to pound too much.

Mile 1 is 6:53 thanks to the downhill.  I try not to think about how the downhill is beating up my legs.  Feels good now but on the uphill it’s going to hurt!

Mile 2 is 7:07.  Almost to the first uphill, Cardiac bypass…feels like it sounds!  I see Karen and two other girls ahead.  I hope to catch up soon.

I hit the hill and as usual my legs scream.  I push through the pain and manage to catch up to the first two girls.  Karen is running strong and it takes me the whole hill to close the gap.   “Good job Karen” I say as I come alongside her. As we hit the top I see Carolyn from the track.  I’m too winded to shout out hi to her.

Mile 3 is 8:08.  Wow, thanks Lord for a strong climb!  Now it’s flat followed by more downhill.  Hard to say how the legs will feel after that.  I see Mo up ahead and am surprised to see her.  Along the way I catch up to Gary and then Kayden.  “Good job!”  I also pass Dieter from the track.

Mile 4 is 7:38. Down the dam road…ugh, poor legs!  I see Mo pulling away now.  Up ahead is the “Supergirl”, wearing socks with capes on them, and our friend Jesse Warda.

Mile 5 is 7:13.  Off the road and heading over to Robie Point now.  The real test starts now.  Do the legs have what it takes?  I catch up to Jesse and tell him good job.  I also pass Supergirl and try to tell her I like her socks.  She’s got her earbuds in and she’s in the zone so I get no response…oh well.

I pass Mo and tell her good job.  She encourages me and I am touched.  I start to feel a bonk coming on so I pull out my gel and start working on it.  Suddenly it flies out of my hand and drops.  Bummer!  I need it and I don’t want to litter so I go back.  Mo passes by and I start up again and hang with her.  Running along with Mo is a real treat.  She is constantly encouraging others and she is constantly being recognized.

Mile 6 is 8:33.  Almost to Robie Point and will be able to see where some of the competition coming back from the out and back.  There is Dave Campbell running strong and I tell him good job.  I hope to see Troy soon.  Within the minute I see him coming with his smile.  I tell him good job and to go get Dave.  Three women are way up there and looking really strong!

Mile 7 is 8:15.  Mo and I hit the turnaround and get to see who is behind us.  Supergirl is coming fast and Karen is right there.  I give Karen a high five.  Dieter is up the road and I give him a high five too.

We hit Robie Point hill which is one of the toughest, besides the last mile of the race.  I’m able to pull away from Mo and Supergirl.  It’s a super steep downhill on the other side and I do my best to try to float down…though it’s more like a stampede.

Mile 8 is 8:18.  Okay, this mile coming up is the toughest.  I barely have any juice left in the legs so I use my arms and try to push off more with each step.  Thank you Lord for letting me get this far!

Mile 9 is 8:32.  Almost there!  On each consecutive hill that comes, I try to push hard to get a gap.  I’m not looking back so I have no idea what’s going on behind me.

Finally, the last hill and soon the finish!  This hill mentally is tough.  Made it!  The finish line is around the corner and I give what’s left to get to it.  I hear Anna cheering and I look up and see her running towards me.  With her encouragement, I am able to surge to the finish.  Yeah, I’m done!

Supergirl finishes behind me and I wait to tell her good job.  Mo comes next.  I see Karen and the clock is ticking close to 1:20.  “Come on Karen, break 1:20!”  She presses on and does it!  Yeah!  I got the pleasure of cheering in the rest of our friends!  Thank you Jesus for a fun day!  Now off to get Ariel and go to the pizza party/awards party!
