PART 1 – BIKE (Sat. Dec. 31st)

Since New Year’s Day falls on a Sunday, we’ve decided to break up our event over 2 days so folks can get to church on Sunday morning.  This also means extra sleep and rest!

Six of us brave riders meet at the Overlook: Jesse Warda, Kayden Kelly, Mike Bradley, Trixie Bradley, Troy Soares and myself.  It’s sunny and not terribly cold…I don’t have my cold weather jacket on which is a good sign!

Before we get to the climbs, we ride our traditional warmup loop down AF to Powerhouse or Newcastle, through town, and then down Hwy 49 to the start of the Old Foresthill climb.  I’m feeling pretty good but the hill will reveal the truth!

Climb #1

After Mike Bradley starts, it’s my turn.  Ready, set, go!  Not too far into it, my legs and lungs are screaming at me.  This is almost ALWAYS the case on this climb.  I just try to ignore it and push on. I know that Trixie is coming soon so I’m riding like I want to get away.

I hope to get to Mammoth Bar in 10 min. I’d like to be at the top under 18 minutes so I know getting to Mammoth Bar in 10 is a good benchmark for that.

I pass about the 1/3 mark and Mike.  “Good job Mike!”.  I can see orange, it’s Trixie…go!

I make it to Mammoth Bar in 10 min, yeah!  Just another tough 100 yrds and it gets better!  Dig, dig, dig!  I look back and see orange and someone else.  I push even more.

It levels out so I get down into my drops (lower part of handlebars), put my head down and pick it up.  I’m flying and it’s fun!

It starts to go up again and I sense someone coming.  Jesse flies by and then Kayden. Can I hold off Troy?  No, he gets me too! Almost held them off!  I’m going to be under 18 min, yeah! The stop sign is just ahead and I try to push hard but my legs are feeling flat.  Go!  I dig deep and am done!  17:32!

Troy and then Trixie finish up.  Soon after Mike is here.  Now it’s off to the Foresthill Bridge!

Climb #2

Once at the bridge we line up in the order we finished on Old Foresthill Road. Trixie is in front of me because her climb was faster, she just started farther behind me.  Ready, set, go!  Off we go pacelining across the bridge.  I get a little behind and have to push to get on Trixie’s wheel.  Once across Kayden, Jesse and Troy take off.  Trixie pulls ahead.

Come on legs and lungs!  Again I must ignore them and push through.  I catch up to Trixie about halfway up the hill.  There are about six road signs ahead that I always focus on.  Each one brings me closer to the end.

Trixie is pulling close again as we near the top.  “Come on Trixie!”   I think I’ve got it but she’s right there!  I push but she pushes harder and gets me at the line! Wow, that was close! “Great job Trixie!”

So nice to be done for the day!  Now we can have some great recovery going into the Resolution Run!

PART 2 – RESOLUTION RUN (Sun. Jan. 1st)

So great to start out the New Year at church!  I ignore my nerves while listening to Pastor Eric Van Patten preach and soak in God’s word!

After church is done, my nerves kick in which really means I’m ready to roll!  It’s looking like rain but it could hold off.  It’s also pretty chilly.  We left a car close to the start before church in case it pours and we need a place to huddle before and after the race.

This year Ariel is running the 5K all by herself.  Troy and her have worked out a secret goal that I don’t even know about.  She seems excited to go for it.  Anna is super excited to run the 10K.  She’s been so motivated to train and race.  It’s very cool but I just hope it stays fun!

Troy and I warm-up while the girls stay warm in the car.  I’m feeling good but I know that I’m lacking speed work and some endurance.  We missed our track workout since we were in San Diego for Christmas.  I haven’t been on a good schedule and have missed some runs.  We’ll see how it goes!  I’d like to run 8:17 pace like last year.  It’s chilly so I’m wearing 3 layers on top, gloves and a beanie.  I hope it’s not too much!

Troy and I start first, 15 min later is Anna and 30 min later is Ariel.  Ready, set, go!  Troy takes off and I try to get into a good rhythm.  We are a huge stampede heading down towards Railhead.  A big truck is coming at us but quickly pulls over…phew!

We turn off the main road and head towards China Bar.  I think I’m going faster than last year already!  Maybe my legs can go fast!

Mile 1 is 6:48. Great!  Kayden passes me.  “Good job Kayden!”  I plan on trying to keep him in my sights.

Mile 2 is 7:13.  Down, down, down.  We are approaching my favorite climb, Cardiac Bypass.

Here we go!  This is where I usually catch runners and I hope to catch Kayden and the 2 girls I see ahead of me.  A quarter of the way up I’m passed by a guy…that’s a surprise!  As I continue I seem to be maintaining the same distance from everyone.  I’m pushing it and my heartrate reveals it.  I really have a hard time holding back here.  I love to catch people so I keep digging.

Finally, as I pass the halfway point, I catch one girl. The other girl is visible ahead but she continues to run strong.  As I approach the top, I get a few more…but not the ones I was hoping.  More hills to come!

Mile 3 is 8:36.  Alright!  Going faster than last year I think so I’ll take it!

Mile 4 is 8:13.  Heading down the long and steep Dam Road!  I expect the top 5Kers to go by soon.  A kid and a guy from my race goes by.  I get passed generally going downhill so hope to catch them once it goes up soon.  Kayden and that other girl are nowhere in sight.

We turn off the road and are back on the trails.  Time to get the legs used to climbing again!

170101_rrun_10mile_robinMile 5 is 7:32.  Three 5k guys fly by.  The sun is actually out!  I’m feeling warm and regreting the 3rd layer.  I pass the kid and tell him good job!

Feeling tired!  Not feeling as strong on this climb. I think I might have overdone it on Cardiac Bypass.

Mile 6 is 8:56.  My pace has definitely slowed.  Sometimes I feel at this point of the race that I wish it is over but fortunately not yet!  There must be something left.

Here come the 10K runners!  I hope to see Anna!  Here comes Emerson!  Emerson is Anna’s best friend Leah’s brother.  “Go Emerson!”  And soon I see Anna way up there with our friend Mo Bartley!  “Go Anna, go Mo!”  She’s got a big smile on her face…love it!  I’m so impressed she’s able to keep up with a fast gal like Mo!

I make it over to the other side of Robie Point.  I hit the out and back section. I should see Troy any minute…and there he his!  He’s chasing down another guy and has a big smile on his face…love it!  “Go Troy”…and I here him say “God is good!”

Mile 7 is 8:40.  As I continue to head out, I look for Kayden and that gal.  It’s not until almost the green gate that I see Kayden and that girl heading back.  Though they don’t seem too far ahead, I think they’ve got a few minutes on me.  And I’m not feeling so strong so it will be hard to catch them!

I finally make the turn at the gate.  As I head back, I see a girl coming fast.  Uh oh, I’ve got to hold my place!  Go!  It actually helps me pick it up!

Mile 8 is 8:10.  I’ve got to run up these last hills as fast as I can.  I hope to have more energy than the girl gaining on me at least!  I push it up Robie Point.  There is no one visually to catch but I run well.  The downhill on the other side is slow…too scared of falling!

170101_rrun_10mile_robin_mcI look back and that girl is right on me!  Yikes! I’ve got 3 hills to get up hopefully ahead of her.  I push hard to get to the next hill first.  I just push.  As I pass walkers and slower runners, I say “2 on your left”…I pave the way for both of us because I don’t want to block or impede her race in any way.  She sticks with me on the first hill.

Mile 9 is 8:54. I push the flats and continue to call out to walkers and runners.  I can sense her still there.  On the 2nd hill, I push hard again.  At the top, I keep calling out “2 on your left” but as I look back it’s just me!  Go!  I try to push the flat.

I get to the last hill that takes me up to the finish. I can do this!  I push hard up and out.  I hear Troy and the girls cheering me on!  Go, go!

Mile 10 is 9:34.  I dig deep and make it to the line ahead of that girl!  Yeah!  I didn’t catch Kayden or that other gal, but I’m really happy to have persevered in the end!  I wait for that girl to finish and congratulate her.  Thank you Lord for getting me through!

*Racers: Bob Erhart, Carrie & Steve Chavez, Christine Val, Helen Martin, Karen Nickel, Melissa Penwell, Michael Cortez, Mike Pirnat

So excited to be racing my 19th relay!  And very excited that Anna is joining in the yearly tradition!  I drive to the 2nd relay exchange.  I’m taking Troy & Anna’s teammate, Kris Kennnedy, to meet Troy as he finishes the first 2 legs.  Troy will then rush off and take Anna to the 3rd exchange.  I’ll stay here to meet Liesbeth as she finishes Leg #2.

It’s so fun to be here at the halfway way point early to see the wheelchair folks and elite runners go by!  Soon I see our friend Melissa Penwell way up there in her pink socks…man, she’s flying!  Here comes Troy with a smile on his face!  Kris takes off and I say goodbye to my family as they leave.

I told my buddy Karen Nickel that if I see her I will run a mile with her.  I’m looking carefully and almost forgetting I need to be ready to go.  Unfortunately I miss seeing Leonie who is waiting to pick up Liesbeth after already running the first leg.  I see Liesbeth and make the exchange.  I tell her great job!

I take off without seeing Karen.  I hope she ran by already and I just missed her.  I’m feeling pumped up!  The 3:33 pace group is just ahead and my neighbor Tim Twietmeyer is leading it.

Mile 1 is 7:10.  My high hopes for 7 min pace are probably not going to happen but got to keep it under 7:30!

Mile 2 is 7:12. This is feeling harder!  I realize I never stretched before I started.  I get so distracted cheering on others and looking for folks, I just forget those important details sometimes!

161204_cim_relay_robinMile 3 is 7:10.  I catch the 3:33 group.  “Hey Tim!”  He asks me about Anna and I tell him she’s finishing the relay and her team is ahead.  “I hope she beats me!”.

Mile 4 is 7:24.  Still under 7:30 pace but this is feeling tough.  My new shoes are not great and the forefoot feels like it’s on fire!

MIle 5 is 7:27.  Hang in there!  The hills are just enought to sap some energy.  I catch the 3:28 group.  I wonder if I’m gaining on Kris.  Maybe I’ll get to hitch a ride with Troy to the finish!

Mile 6 is 7:29.  Okay, time to get serious!  Let’s go!  1 More Mile!!

I feel pumped again to go and I start digging deep.  I got to stay under 7:30 and get this pain over with!

Yeah, I see the exchange!  I see Megan!  We make a good exchange and she’s off!  To the finish!

161204_cim_relay_meganI start walking with Megan’s family (hubby, Toney, and the kiddos) to their car.  Suddenly I see Troy in the van!  Great timing!  I say thanks and goodbye to Toney and jump in!  Off to see Anna and Megan at the finish!

TROY

It’s going to be a perfect day for running.  It’s always exciting being part of a relay, knowing others are counting on you.  Even more exciting that my teammate, Anna, 11 years old, will get to end at the marathon finish line along with thousands of others.  She’s been talking about this since last year when she watched other Relays finish.

I pick up Karen, Mike, Issac and Jim and head to the start.  It was the same plan as previous years but this time the 20 min bathroom wait has made the situation dire.  Karen and Mike are doing the marathon and there’s only 7 min to the start!  Jim is a marathon pacer and has special VIP priveleges so probably didn’t wait in any lines.  It’s Mike’s first CIM so I run off with him to get him through the bag check and to the starting area.  With only a minute till the start we’re still trying to make our way to the 3:10 group.  I hope Karen & Isaac got a good spot.

Go! It’s a really slow start with hundreds in front of us.  Mike & I run together, moving slowly around others.  I bump into Michael Cortez from Tuesday Night Track.  Although a 100mi ultra runner, he’s doing his first marathon!  We both comment on it being crazy to find someone you know amidst thousands.

Mile 1. 7:36.  Turning onto Oak we get the first feel of effort on the slight climb.  Our pace is slower than planned (7:00 for me, 7:15 for Mike) but Mike seems very relaxed and fine with it.  I especially want his race to go well because I didn’t get him to the start early enough.

I want to get us back on track but without effort so I coach Mike about the rollers, easing up them, and making up time down them.  It goes well.  We run near the edge of the road to get clear road ahead.

Mile 2. 7:02.  The road is clearing up more.  I get water but Mike doesn’t.  I encourage him to take some of mine.  I also realize the best I can do for his race is pray for him so I ask if I can and say a quick prayer for God to give us both good races.  He’s thankful and we continue on, using the downhills to our advantage.

Mile 3. 6:40. We’ve passed the 3:13 pace group.  We also pass a Forward Motion pack including Carrie Chavez!  Great to see her and chat a little.  She will surely do well.

The weather is perfect.  I have a base layer, arm warmers and gloves but I’m warming up quite fast and the sun is coming out.  Mike sheds his long sleeve.

Mile 4. 6:52. I get more water.  Making sure I drink a lot because I’m going to need a big effort soon to reach my goal and water is critical for good muscle function.  Spectators have been great as usual.  A group of volunteer girls are trying to yell the beat of the Rocky “Eye of the Tiger” theme, very funny.

Mile 5. 6:49. I tell Mike we’re now under his 3:10 goal pace but it’s ok because of the downhills of this first half.  He seems comfortable and happy with the race

Mile 6. 7:01. Another gradual downhill stretch.  The road is wide and plenty of room to run smooth now.  We’ve caught the 3:08 pace group.  I remind Mike that we started a little behind them so he’s really ahead of them.  He agrees this is a good group to stay with.  I encourage him and keep saying to stay relaxed.  And that I’m going to push ahead.

Now it’s back to my race.  I want to get to transition on time (about 8:34 am) and with the slow start I’m not sure how it will play out but figure on just running as fast as I can :)

Mile 7: 6:49.  Feels good.  I drink a lot of water.  I plan my first gel at 8mi and look forward to it

Mile 8: 6:46. Another fast mile.  I enjoy a gel and a cup of water.  I think about God’s blessings and appreciate him being with me.

Mile 9: 6:52. All going well.  Even with some hills on this mile.  I can’t wait to get to the little town at mile 10 where the H.S. band plays and I get another gel.

Mile 10: 6:46.  Love the town.  Even feeling more tired now, I appreciate them all being out here.  I eat my gel and now have to make a quick porta-potty break since I skipped using the bathroom before the start of the race.

Mile 11: 6:58.  Had a very fast bathroom break but still lost about 20 secs.  Determined to make it up.  Pushing hard!  My calf feels a little tight, and the achilles acts up a little, so I take some moments to go easier before picking it up on the downhills.

Mile 12: 6:50.  The last long straight away.  My spirits are lifted when I see the 1/2 Marathon arch.  But then I realize it’s still another 1/2 mile to transition.  I pick it up even more to see what I can get for a 1/2 marathon since I haven’t done one since my last marathon.

Mile 13: 6:38.  fastest mile yet!  Great, 1:31 1/2.  Now, feeling done, but gotta try to catch the 3:03 pace group before I had off to Kris.  After seeing them for a couple miles, I finally pass them!

Mile 13.5  I see Kris easily and he’s smiling.  We have a great exchange.  No stress, just happy to be doing this together.  I send him off with, “May you feel the Lord’s pleasure.”  I hope he has a great run.

Robin is here ready to get tagged by her partner, Liesbeth.  I take Anna & Ariel and head off to the final exchange where she will start her momentous run…

ANNA

WP_20161204_004I see Chris and I get ready to run. Chris gives me a High-5 and then I take off the chip on his leg and put it on mine. I start running and I feel great and I can’t stop smiling.

Mile 1. 7:23. I keep running and see an aid station. I get some water and then I keep running.

Mile 2. 7:38. I run over a bridge with lots of people cheering for me and everyone else.

Mile 3. 7:53. I keep running and seeing people cheering and people playing instruments

Mile 4. 7:47. I am still smiling while running and I 161204_cim_relay_annaknow I am close to being done

Mile 5. 7:44. I see a Christmas tree and the finish on the other side of me and I get excited. I hear somebody call my name and I look and see my friends Ellie and Ben cheering for me. Then I turn the corner then turn again and see the finish and sprint and beat one girl while sprinting and finish.

Mile 5.8. 6:54 pace.  Wow.  I get a space blanket, some food and take pictures with my team.  That was great!

Davis Turkey Trot 10k - Troy

Date/Location:

November 19, 2016 – Davis, CA

Distances:

10km Run

Time:

40:48

Place:

2nd of 19. 18th overall

Teammates:

5K: Ariel Soares, Robin Soares
10K: Richard Kane, Caryn Galekas, Suzanne Hartley,Anna Soares

Haven’t trained as I would have liked, but I always want to do my best. My main concern is not hurting something like my achilles, perenial tendon, glute or hamstring.

TeamSoares at Turkey TrotThe exciting part is Anna running her 1st 10k!  And that our friends, Susanne Hartley & Caryn Galekas, are here to run.  We all pray together before our races.

After we see Robin & Ariel off on their 5k, Anna & I warm-up and stretch.  It’s raining slightly and chilly (50 deg) but doing strides gets us breathing hard and loose enough to stretch.  This all helps me to prevent injury and Anna to prevent side cramps.

Our goals are 6:50 pace & 9:20 pace and we line up at the start accordingly.  We pray again.  we both know that we will be watched by God and by others and we really want to show our apreciation and thankfulness for them.

Anna has a light long sleave under her jersey and I have arm warmers and gloves.  Perfect.  I’m alongside friend, Richard Kane, and we talk about the upcoming triathlon season.

Troy_StartGo! Something about a crowd running that makes it feel so easy.  I’m focussed on good form, light feet, and not pushing the pace early.  I see a young firl about 12 and I wonder if Anna will eventually run with her.  It’s going well. Nothing is hurting.  We’re on the streets.  Rich and I are still together.

Mile 1. 6:37.  More streets and then onto the park pathways which are great and scenic.  Staying with a group.  Some high school / college kids.

Mile 2. 6:45. Went slower.  Feeling surprisingly good, though, so will try to pick it up.  Great pathways.

Mile 3. 6:40. Great. Getting faster. Running tall.  Near the first woman.  Pull ahead. Thinking a lot about Anna back there somewhere. Praying it goes well. And thanking the Lord for letting my body feel much better than it should.  I want to run well for Him.

Troy2Mile 4. 6:35. Even better!  Heading back now. Tired. Looking forward to 5 miles.

Mile 5. 6:25. So great to see negative splits. Only a mile to go. Imagining a mile at our FCA Tuesday Track workouts. Very happy with this run.  Hope to break 41.  On the long finish stretch now.  Can I catch the guy far ahead?

Mile 6. 6:13. Terrific. I hear Robin and Ariel cheering.  I pass the runner and sprint with all I’ve got.  Troy_Finish2Thank you, Lord, for this race and allowing me to run pain-free.  Now I can’t wait to head back and see where Anna is…..

Mile 4: 7:40. I keep running and making goals for my self like, “I can't wait till I get to 4 and a half miles”. Now I see that the boy I passed is right behind me. I keep running for a little bit and then he passes me. I say good jod to him and ask how old he was. He says he is 9 years old. I am surprised that a 9 year old is passing me. But it is just my first 10k.

Anna3Mile 5: 7:44. I keep running and soon I’m on a road and there is a turn-around. So l turn around and then turn again then way ahead is the finish line!

Mile 6: 7:54. I run and my family cheers me on and I sprint in to the finish. I got first in my age group and got a time of 50 min. I feel thankful and happy at the same time.

I’m looking forward to the family racing together and having a yummy breakfast after!  It looks like rain but hard to tell at this race. Ariel and I are doing the 5K and Troy and Anna the 10K.  This is Anna’s first 10K!  Ariel will run on her own and I’ll finish with her once I cross the line.  She was running so fast yesterday when we did a family mile run.  She wants to run 30 minutes.

TeamSoares at Turkey TrotI ran 21:24 last year and I’m not expecting to match that.  I have been feeling a bit discouraged by my fitness…but it’s my own fault because I’m not putting in the miles.  I am very encouraged by my spiritual fitness.  I feel a closeness with the Lord and a desire to be an ambassador for Him!

We find our FCA teammates Caryn Galeckas and Suzanne Hartley.  We all pray together.  Nice!  Ariel and I line up.  Troy gets her in a good, safe spot closer to the back.  The 5Kers are starting with the half marathoners.

Ready, set, go!  We are off. I take off with the 1:30 half marathon pace group.  I hope to go under 7 min pace so this is a good place to be!  Haven’t been running this kind of pace for more than a mile at the FCA track workouts so it’s risky. I actually feel strong so maybe it will be okay.

Mile 1 is 6:41. Nice!  Feeling good!

I pass the 1:30 group because their pace has dropped off a bit.  I run under the ped overpass.  No runners there yet so I must be doing okay.  I’ll look for Ariel down below once I get up the there.

The 1:30 group is with me again but we soon split off.  I tell them great job and keep it up!  We jump onto a greenbelt and wind our way back to the ped overpass.  I look for Ariel’s pink shirt but don’t see her.  I call out her name in case she can hear me.

Mile 2 is 6:50.  Good!  Still feeling strong!  Thank you Lord!  What a gift to be able to push so hard!

I run through a park and pass 2 girls.  I tell them good job.  Soon, I’m back on the street and heading back to the finish.  I look at my watch and wonder if I can actually go under 21 min.  That would cool!

I can see the finish way off.  Dig deep!  Those other girls are probably not far behind!

Mile 3 is 6:37.  Pushing hard, smiling and thanking Jesus!

Robin_FinishI cross the finish in 21:27.  Wow, so close to last year!  I’m happy with that!

I hug Troy and Anna at the finish and run back for Ariel.  Troy and Anna are now off to the start of their race.  I find Ariel running really strong.  I tell her right when she hits a certain landmark to sprint like she did on her run yesterday.  Right on cue, she goes for it!  She finishes under 30 minutes!  Yeah!  Thank You God!

TeamSoares at Turkey TrotGo!!!!  I run off.  I’m starting to feel behind.  I’m sad that Mommy and Daddy aren’t with me.  I start to feel better.  Then I see the sign for 1 Mile.

Mile 1. 9:01. I keep running and I see the bridge that racers cross.  I look for Mom but don’t see her.

I keep running and make a turn. I see a sign pointing 5Kers right and I follow it onto a trail.  I keep following the trail and see that bridge again.  I go over the bridge.

Mile 2. 9:31. I see the sign for Mile 2 and an Aid Station.  I grab a cup of water, drink it and throw it.

I keep running and see another 5K sign in a park.  I follow the people in front of me.  We get back to the road going to the finish line.  I see someone in yellow coming towards me and think it is Dad coming for me.  But it is Mom.  She encourages me all the way to the finish.

Mile 3. 9:38. At the very end I sprint super hard.  I come into the finish.  I finished!!!!Ariel_Finish
